Fira, Santorini
You're looking at a city perched at the edge of a massive volcanic crater, the basin of which is filled with the ocean. The island of Santorini was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, around 1630BC.

Fira at dusk. Fira, Santorini
North of Fira is the town of Oia, which boasts even more spectacular views, plus unobstructed views westward, which makes for dramatic sunsets over the Aegean.

Looking southwest, this view is of the caldera, with a beautiful sailing ship and one of the famous blue-domed church spires. The island of Thirassia is visible in the background. Oia, Santorini
